TOM enters, still disconsolate at the thought that he denied knowing his mother. He looks around and approaches the throne.
TOM I woke and looked at every sunrise That did not light her face While every night the shadows Spilled across an empty space
Then at last I saw light In my mother`s eyes And I cast a shadow With one foolish lie
My heart has flown inside a dream now But it has turned to stone How could I turn away from All the love I`ve known?
In these halls of wonder Stands a lonely throne And a heart cries for me In a place called home
There is a prince inside my smile But paupers` blood runs through my heart When will the boy that I should be Break out from these chains and set me free?
(The lights dim on TOM and a spotlight comes up on EDWARD, sitting on the floor of the dungeon.)
EDWARD The tender mercy of a stranger Lives in my prayers today When she breathed so much kindness Why did God turn away?
In this hell around me Pain becomes my throne But I hear duty call me From a place called home
There is a prince lost in my eyes A pauper grieves inside my heart When will the boy that I should be Break out from these chains and set me free?
(Another spotlight comes up on TOM.)
EDWARD & TOM I live inside a haunting nightmare Because the childish dreams A prince shared with a pauper Were not what they seemed
Now the prince and pauper Both share a threadbare throne And I pray that somewhere There`s a dream called home
