"A Soldier`s Hymn" / alx4asong
Song lyrics, added: 3/23/2007, Devotion

Lyrics by: alx4asong
Inspired by: For the heroes... fighting Bush`s war...
Viewed: 141 times

I was down in the trenches
the enemy was near
a young man was praying
to help calm his fears...

I said,"Hold it down soldier,
so the whole world can`t hear
he turned to me and smiled
and with a voice loud and clear...

He said,"Follow me brother
this battle is won
for God is my father
and I...
am his son

I froze when he stood up
and started marching on
singing a sweet song
I hadn`t heard in so long

Amazing grace and memories
came rushing back to me
but nothing as amazing
as what I was there to see...

He didn`t have a rifle
just a Bible in his hand
as the insults and the bullets
went flying by this man...

He said,"Follow me brother,
this battle is won
for God is my father
and I...
am his son

Fighting back my tears
I fell in with this man
and why I`m here to tell you
I`ll never understand...

But when the evil bullets
finally found their mark
the sun came falling down
and eveything went dark...

The enemy went running
so scared and confused
the lightning lit my way
to the soldier broke and bruised...

Through bursting shells of starlight
he took me by the hand...
and said,"The enemy stands no chance,
against a well armed man...

He handed me his Bible
his last words still ring true
"You may not believe in God...
but God believes in you!

Everything went quiet
the sun was back in place
my hands were now empty,
tears falling from my face

There was noone with me
the soldier boy was gone
but I swear I heard Angels
singing a heavenly song...

And in the wind an echo
as I heard his voice again

He said,"Follow me brother,
this battle is won
for God is my father
and I...
am his son

Coda:
Amazing Grace
how sweet the sound...
that saved a wretch
like me...

So you’re fighting all forms of ignorance, arrogance, hatred and greed with spirituality in this one. Very clever. Excellent! Nice setting.

An excellent read start to finish. I was never in a war, and don`t plan to be, but I do have faith, or belief. It depends on how you look at it, I suppose.
The imagery was simple, and still profound. I think the overall structure helped to make the entire song seem real and believable--to me it looks rough, much like an army situation would be. And God? Awesome.

I fear my review doesn`t make sense. But I`m not going to change it because this is stream of consciousness. I really really did like this. If you get a melody up for it, I`ll surely listen! Good job!

Michael, OIF III was Operation Iraqi Freedom III. I was there from November 04 until October 05.

As a vet of OIF III, I appreciate your words ... especially the truth of God in the midst of war. Thank you.

WOW, the story in this was a must read to the end, as anna said without the music it kinda loses a lot of impact, but it was still a very very enjoyable read.

This is one of my favorites of yours. The inspired by is so true for a lot of people. The chorus is really good. I hope you get a melody up soon, I wanna see how it goes. What style of music would this be? It doesn`t say. I think the lyrics are very country, and it could be a hit country song. But I also think it could fall into the rock or blues spectrum also. Good work. -Anna
